IDP Imbizo Launch: Small Investment, Big Opportunity for Local Carpentry
The IDP Imbizo programme kicked off today with a tangible boost for a local small business: Mr. Mbatha, a carpenter from Ward 1’s Maqongqo area, received a Tilting Arbor Table Saw – a machine that could transform a one-man workshop into a growing enterprise.
The gift is more than equipment. A precision table saw increases production capacity, improves product quality, and enables a broader range of furniture designs. Those gains make apprenticeships and on-the-job skills transfer viable, creating pathways for formal training and higher-value workmanship. Over time, greater output and improved finishes can win larger contracts and open retail or institutional markets, allowing the business to hire additional staff.
Mayor Nhlakanipho Ntombela’s candid note that funds are limited is important: municipal resources cannot meet every need at once. But strategic, targeted investments like this one demonstrate how modest public support can catalyse durable growth. Prioritised inputs that match the core constraints of small enterprises – tools, workspace upgrades, linkages to markets and training – tend to produce higher returns than unfocused handouts.
To maximise impact, this equipment donation should be paired with:
- Structured skills development and mentorship to ensure safe, efficient use and to transfer knowledge to apprentices.
- Business support services: basic bookkeeping, costing, marketing and access to local procurement opportunities.
- Access to materials and supplier networks to reduce input costs and stabilise production.
- Monitoring and follow-up to measure job creation, income growth and barriers encountered.
When municipalities invest in productive assets and back them with complementary services, they shift entrepreneurs from survival-mode to growth-mode. Mr. Mbatha’s new saw may seem a single item, but it can be a linchpin for expanding local manufacturing, creating jobs in Ward 1, and demonstrating how targeted public support helps small businesses scale. That practical, strategic approach is precisely what community-driven economic development needs.
This workshop was designed to educate and equip traders with essential financial knowledge to help them thrive in their businesses. Participants learned:
- How to save and manage money effectively – ensuring they can plan for the future and sustain their businesses.
- How to grow their businesses – learning strategies to increase sales, attract customers, and expand operations.
- The importance of registering their businesses – opening doors to funding opportunities and formal support systems.
Over 40 participants attended, showing a strong commitment to improving their skills and building more successful enterprises. The workshop also provided a space for networking, sharing ideas, and inspiring one another.
This reflects our commitment to uplifting communities and supporting local entrepreneurs so that they can grow, succeed, and contribute meaningfully to the local economy.
We look forward to hosting more workshops like this and seeing our traders flourish!
